The Republic of Ghana was among the first to accord recognition to the Republic of Angola in December 1975 after its attained independence from Portugal. Subsequently, a diplomatic mission was established in Luanda in 1976. The first Ghanaian Ambassador to Angola was appointed on 8^th October, 1976 and has since maintained a consistence diplomatic relations with Angola.

The two (2) countries enjoy long standing historical, cultural and economic relations which have contributed to an appreciable level the establishment of political goodwill between both countries. After the end of the civil war in 2002 and its attendant peace and stability, Angola in 2005 established a diplomatic mission in Accra.

The current level of political relations between the two (2) countries is considered positive and cordial. The bilateral relations between both countries have been characterised by exchange of visits by a number of senior government officials from both sides. The first state visit by an Angolan President was in June, 2010 by the late President, H.E José Eduardo dos Santos. Ghana made its historic state visit to Angola on 8^th August, 2019 by H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo which was reciprocated by the incumbent president, H.E João Manuel Gonҫalves lourenҫo on 1st August, 2021.

The former Angolan Vice President, H.E Dr. Bornito de Sousa Baltazar Diogo, in January, 2021 attended the investiture of the Ghanaian president. H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his re-election as president of Ghana.

In February, 2022, Ghana’s first lady, H.E Mrs.Rebecca Akufo-Addo visited Angola at the behest of her Angolan counterpart. H.E Mrs. Ana Dias Lourenҫo.
